A video editor should avoid adding forced black bars in his/her's edits. This video is a great example of it. I learned this long back when I saw Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight Rises' movie. The aspect ratio of the movie kept changing throughout because half of it was shot on the iMax. Then Snyder's cut of Justice League was released in a 4:3 ratio. So to make a scene look larger than life or to make a figure dominating, you don't need to add black bars on normal 16:9 shots that we mostly edit. In my opinion, these ratios of iMax are cinematic enough, and adding black bars forcefully is an unnecessary exercise.#editingskills #videoediting #cinema

Is Disney Pixar's Elemental a bomb?I went looking for comparables, sifting for first time, straight theatrical IPs, mainly excluding sequels and derivatives. It's a bit tricky, given theatrical releases over the past 3 years have been chopped and chomped around due to COVID. The film didn't get off to the strongest start but it's still outpacing many recent original releases. It's well beyond, Strange World, also from Disney, a definite underperformer from last year (and FWIW it's also well above Lightyear). It's also ahead of The Bad Guys, which was an original from DreamWorks, released last Spring last year as final restrictions were lifting. I threw in The Good Dinosaur and Coco for good measure (I still think of these as "new" Pixar IP, but they're from 2015 and 2017 respectively!). Coco was an over performer, and Good Dino an underperformer. All in all I'd say Elemental isn't in the Pixar big leagues, but it's definitely not a bomb. Not everything can be (or is intended to be) a blockbuster success like Mario or Rise of Gru. Hit me with your thoughts!#cinema #kidscontent #theatrical #animation
